Snoopy, the world-famous beagle has been known as The Flying Ace, The Masked Marvel, Man’s Best Friend, and the Literary Ace, among other personas; this fall he makes his star turn when he comes to the big screen in The Peanuts Movie from 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios. In September, he’s especially proud to serve as Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-up Month.
The month of September is National Library Card Sign-up Month when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all for all students. The event was launched in 1987 by then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett who said: “Let’s have a national campaign…every child should obtain a library card – and use it.” Since that challenge was offered, thousands of public and school libraries now join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child joins their local library.
This month, the students at my school will meet that challenge when the public librarians from the local “Mighty Five” libraries, will share stories and speak with all the children about the value of having a library card.
For preschool age children libraries offer early literacy and lap sit story-times to encourage school readiness, for older children and teens libraries supplement education with hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM ) programs and innovative makerspaces, and for older teens libraries have information and tools to help prepare for college and mentoring programs. There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card. Get your library card today!
